JAMAICA – On Thursday, August 6th, Jamaica commemorated its 64th Independence Day, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s history. Celebrated annually on August 6th, this day honors Jamaica’s liberation from more than 300 years of British colonial rule in 1962 and its emergence as an independent country within the British Commonwealth.

Jamaica’s journey to independence was shaped by pivotal events. After centuries under Spanish and then British control, the island joined the West Indies Federation in 1958 but voted to seek full self-governance in 1961. The crucial step came in July 1962 when the Jamaica Independence Act was passed by the UK Parliament. On the night of August 5th to 6th, the Jamaican flag was raised for the first time, symbolizing the nation’s newfound sovereignty.

Sir Alexander Bustamante became the nation’s first Prime Minister, and Princess Margaret represented Queen Elizabeth II at the inaugural ceremony of Jamaica’s new parliament.

The national motto, “Out of Many, One People,” reflects the unity and diversity that characterize Jamaica. Independence Day is celebrated across the island with colorful parades, raised flags, music, and festivities, making it one of Jamaica’s most significant public holidays.
