Today, the streets of Jerusalem are alive with song, color, and heartfelt gratitude. Israeli flags wave in the breeze as thousands gather, united by history, faith, and hope—it is Jerusalem Day, or Yom Yerushaláyim (Hebrew: יום ירושלים), a national holiday commemorating one of the most pivotal moments in modern Jewish history.

A City Reclaimed, A People United

Jerusalem Day marks the miraculous reunification of East and West Jerusalem after the Six-Day War in 1967. For the first time since ancient times, Jewish people were liberated to walk to the Western Wall to pray, celebrate, and unite.

Miracles on the Battlefield

The Six-Day War was marked as a turning point that demonstrated courage, unexpected surprises and unspeakable favor. Israeli forces were outnumbered and their resources were limited in comparison with the opposition’s resources, yet they were able to have the victory! They were able to reclaim historical sites that immaculate biblical significance, which were the Temple Mount and Western Wall.

A Day of Spirit and Remembrance

Since 1967, Yom Yerushalayim has been celebrated each year, officially recognized as a national holiday since 1998. Every 28th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar, six weeks after Passover and one week before Shavuot. On this special day, the Israelis gather to prayers, give thanks, have processions, and celebrate with flags, and honor the soldiers who gave their lives!

Across Israel—and Across the World

During this time the religious and the secular Israelis use this time to read special psalms and recite Hallel prayers. Many families go to the Western Wall to commemorate Jerusalem Day.

The Legacy Endures

Jerusalem Day stands as a special connection between a people and their city. Now is the moment to think about the miracles that took place in recognition of this special day while also making it our goal to always pray for the Peace of Jerusalem, according to Psalm 122.

Happy Jerusalem Day! May the story of Jerusalem continue to inspire oneness, thanksgiving, and peace for the future of the Holy Land and for generations to come.
