DALLAS, TEXAS – Even officers can be used to share the love of Christ! A faithful Dallas Police Officer is humbly, but yet powerfully imparting love and protection in the Dallas Community. Many lives have received the benefits of his kindness through his service. Though challenges are presented within the force, his service still stands strong. After thirty-four years and counting of being an officer, he realizes that it is all because of Jesus Christ.

Officer Kevin Williams, Arkansas-Native, and 34-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department, is giving God the glory as he continues to shine the light of Christ through the power of serving the people. His career journey as a police officer also shows the exciting growth that can take place within the force through stick-to-it-iveness which comes from relying on the Hands of the Almighty God.
The Dallas Police Department, founded in 1881, is the principal law enforcement agency committed to serving the Dallas Community. It is headquartered at 1400 S. Botham Jean Blvd., Dallas, Texas, with more than “3,200 police officers, aimed to hit 4,000 by 2029” and a proposed “$5.2 billion budget for the Dallas Police Department and Dallas Fire Rescue,” as referenced by sources.
Officer Kevin’s fantastic journey to policing started July 29, 1991. He has been going strong by the grace of God! He has served within the patrol unit, the K-9 unit, and is currently working in the specialized police unit for Dallas Love Field Airport. According to Officer Kevin, the Dallas Police Department has a wide selection of units and consists of 3,300 people when it is fully staffed. He shared that anyone who desires to serve as an officer, will have no problem with variety.
“If you’re interested in horses, you can go to the Mounting unit. If you have a pilot license, you can be in the Helicopter unit. If you’re interested in kids, you can go to Child Exploitation, [if you’re interested in homicide] …you can go to Homicide/Crime Scene. There are so many different units to go to within this department. You don’t have to be stagnant in just one position.”

From Sweet Beginnings in Arkansas to Becoming a Police Officer in Dallas

It all started in Little Rock, Arkansas, when he was attending the University of Arkansas at Little Rock as a part-time student. He was working full-time as a manager at a restaurant. One particular day at school, he happened to walk through the Student Center, and the Dallas Police just happened to be recruiting there. He went to the table and picked up a pamphlet.

“Once I got the pamphlet, I read through it,” Officer Kevin shared. “And you know, based on the qualifications, I said, ‘Well, I qualify for this now.’”
So, he discussed it with Rose, his then-girlfriend. She is now his remarkable wife with a heart of gold. At the time, she was a schoolteacher.
“I told her about it,” Officer Kevin explained. “She said, ‘Well if that’s something you want to do, why don’t we go to Dallas during my Christmas break and we just make a vacation out of it, while you’re testing?’”
They followed through with the plan and traveled to Texas. There were four days of testing. He made sure to take them all. The only thing left to do was his background check, which he knew was squared away. When they got back to Arkansas, he received a phone call from the Dallas Police Department with good news! He passed everything and he was selected to join the Academy. The next class would start in a month. He was happy to be chosen, but there was a slight dilemma. Since he was still working, he did not want to leave his current job without giving proper notice.
He had to inform the police department of his decision to stay back until his current employer was able to find a replacement. They responded by telling him he would have to be placed on a waiting list. The next class would be six to seven months away. He let them know that he would wait. After everything was set, he let Rose know. She responded in a manner that would make a drastic shift in their lives as a couple.
“You know I love you, and want to be with you,” Rose lovingly stated. “But I don’t want a long-distance relationship.”
Rose made it clear to him, that she would not move anywhere unless they were married. After she shared her thoughts, it would cause him to take a huge step at the young age of 22. He knew that Rose was, “the one.” He did not want to miss this chance. He began to think to himself…
“Well, this is the one,” Officer Kevin devotedly thought. “You know she meets all the qualifications. What am I waiting on?”
He was nervous, but he made preparation and faced his fears. He proposed.

“That was a big step, to go her father to ask for her hand to marry her daughter. That’s something I had to get over,” shared Officer Kevin. “I’m glad that I did it. She’s my best friend, my partner. So, it was one of the best decisions I made outside of accepting Christ.”

With celebrations, Kevin and Rose got married in Arkansas on his 23rd birthday. Rose just turned 24. They continued to live in Little Rock for a little while. Then they moved to Dallas, Texas one month before the Academy started to get acclimated.
Settling in Dallas, Starting the Academy, and Serving within the Patrol Unit
Then it all started! He became a Dallas Police Officer. When he first got to the Academy he was in the patrol unit, which consisted of answering 911 calls. He believes that the patrol unit is the backbone of the police department.

“In that unit, you’re really the face…and those are the people you see day to day. I call them jack of all trades,” Officer Kevin stated.
He shares that this unit requires knowing a little bit about everything, such as the necessity for investigative skills, working traffic accidents, etc. He was also approached by a teacher to volunteer some of his time to work with the kids at a school when he was a rookie. Even though there was no comp time or overtime to do this, he loved making time for the kids as a way to serve in the community.

“I made time to go to the kids, so they can ask me all kinds of questions. It was just a good thing to do in the community,” Officer Kevin happily shared. “Because I remember growing up, anytime we had first responders, anything like that, going to school at that age, it was always exciting.”
He worked in the Patrol Unit for 22 years, and of those years, seven were dedicated to being a field training officer.
“As a field training officer, you train the rookies that’s coming out of campus. So, you’re responsible for training those guys,” said Officer Kevin
Promoted to the K-9 Unit – Witnessing A Miracle of God on the Third Try

While serving he identified that his heart’s desire was to go to the K-9 unit. It was his dream job within the police department. Getting into this unit was by no means smooth sailing, it was a challenge. He admitted that it came with pain.
“It wasn’t an easy road to get into that unit. Even to this day, it’s considered a prestigious unit, because there’s normally only about ten to twelve K-9 handlers around. When you talk about a department of 3,000 officers, most of the time, when a K-9 handler gets that position, you normally don’t leave. You normally stay there for a long period of time.”
Officer Kevin Williams
He went on to say that when a position for the K-9 unit normally opens up, there are about 30-40 people interviewing for that one position. He emphasized that it is extremely hard to get into this particular unit.
“I applied three times before I got in there. The first time, in my heart, I knew I was good enough to be there. You know, with politics and everything else, I wasn’t expecting to get that job on the first interview. It was just to put my face out there and my name out there.”
Officer Kevin Williams
He stated the first interview went quite well. However, it was pretty much known who would get the job at that point. Officer Kevin recognized that it was someone well deserving of the position. The sergeant shared with Officer Kevin that he did a great job and was extremely impressed. He said that if another spot came up, he would select him. Four months later, another position actually came up again, which was out of the norm. He applied this time and thought he would get the job based on what the sergeant told him prior. Sadly, he received an email of rejection, that said he did not get the job. This was like a kick in the stomach.
“It hurt. I think my wife felt it too,” Officer Kevin reflected. “She knew how bad I wanted that position. I didn’t get it that time.”
One to two years passed, a new supervisor was on board, and the K-9 unit position opened up again. The sergeant he originally built rapport with was no longer there. Rose was concerned.
“I don’t think she really wanted me to apply, because she knew how much it hurt me last time when I applied. She just didn’t want me to hurt,” said Officer Kevin.
So, Officer Kevin did the unimaginable. He applied for the third time. He thought to himself, “Well, I don’t have anything to lose.” Little did he know that the Lord had a divine plan! This time the final decision to hire was not up to the acting supervisor. The decision makers were actually above the supervisor; a chief and a lieutenant, that were over that specialized unit. They told the supervisor to give them the top three guys from the conducted interviews, so they could look over each resume and make a decision from there. Officer Kevin was listed in the top three.
“The other two guys in the top three were both already in specialized units,” Officer Kevin stated. “I was the only one that was in the top three that was still attached to patrol (for 22 years). In my mind, I already paid my dues in patrol.”
Because of that very reason, they selected Officer Kevin for the position. God faithfully opened a door for him to move to this unit. He worked in the K-9 unit for seven years.

“That goes back to confirm that through it all, when you stay faithful, God’s still in control. Even when it doesn’t look right. So that was just another big testimony.”
Officer Kevin Williams, Dallas Police Department
He shares the only reason he came out of the K-9 unit was because his partner got sick. Due to this, they had to put his partner down, which happened 18 months before his retirement.

“I had a choice, either stay in the unit, or go somewhere else. I didn’t want to take a chance of bonding with another partner then decide to leave. I had to give him up,” Officer Kevin empathetically shared. “You have to stay over after three years in order to take your partner with you, whether you retire or transfer to a new unit. So, I didn’t want to take that chance.”
The Camera is on a Police Officer at All Times
Officer Kevin discussed the rewards and challenges of being a police officer, emphasizing the opportunity to serve the community and the trust that comes with the uniform. He advises potential officers to enter the profession for the right reasons, stay true to their training, and maintain integrity, while also encouraging them to handle everyone with respect.

“It’s a customer service job. You need to enjoy helping people. If this is something you want to do, come in it for the right reasons,” advised Officer Kevin. “Don’t fall for peer pressure. Stick to your faith. Do the right things and treat people the way you want to be treated. Act like the camera is on you at all times…because it is.”
He also shared his perspective on faith, suggesting that people may not believe in God if they are surrounded by negative influences. But there is hope. He believes that faith can be strengthened, and unbelievers can become believers through positive relationships and exposure to testimonies of God’s work.
Officer Kevin’s Service within the Church
Officer Kevin is a long-time member of Antioch Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. On September 29, 2021, he experienced spiritual growth through his service within the church by being ordained as a deacon. He has attended this church for 34 years and is still going strong, which is as long as he has been in Dallas and within the police force. This is another clear example that demonstrates his character. He is a man of God who remains loyal to whatever he does and wherever he goes.

His faith has a lot to do with his choice in occupation and lifestyle. As Officer Kevin continued to elaborate, he acknowledged a particular similarity between his duties as a police officer and a deacon at his church. This connection is what God desires from all people…
“Both of them are serving,” Officer Kevin confidently stated. “If you love to serve, they go hand in hand. It’s just being a servant.”
As one can see, Officer Kevin sees policing and deaconship as acts of service. His faith guides his actions and resilience. He also dedicates his faith to his grandmother who used to take him to church at a young age. His faith has led him to what he does daily. He attributes success to God’s timing and favor, especially after setbacks. He believes God’s guidance sustains him in his life and career.
Officer Kevin’s Final Thoughts About the Police Department Locally & Nationwide
Officer Kevin understands the challenges as a police officer, in terms of the police department as a whole. He strives to counteract negative stereotypes by exemplifying good conduct and service.
“The Police Department, I’m talking about all over, I’ve seen you have good and bad. What I’ve seen, you have more good than bad. But the negative is what everybody highlights and what everybody sees. So, when you’re in uniform, you want to try to change that narrative.
Anytime you make contact with someone, you want to try to change that negative perception that people have with police officers. Go out there and work hard. Do your job to your best ability. If you have a chance to meet someone, to do something for someone, you have a chance to really change the narrative as far as all police officers, and then they would say, ‘yeah, we got some bads ones, but at the same time, we have some good ones.’”
Officer Kevin Williams
Officer Kevin has observed that there is national and local division that exists but remains optimistic about the prevalence of good people. He believes that if the people within our state and furthermore the nation make a collective effort to make a difference, we will see a change for the better.
I think our nation is divided,” Officer Kevin stated. “Be a positive light, each individual needs to do their part and shine their light.”
Officer Kevin was happy to say that being a police officer is a great job. He believes that it opens up a lot of opportunities and great doors, that come with the uniform. He also sees that when he is not in uniform, he gets treated just like anyone else. With everything that he does on a daily basis, he has one main goal. This goal can be used as an anthem in the lives of many. With this brief but last statement from Officer Kevin, it can positively resound as a targeted message for all to run with and see success.
Keep your hand in His hand. Walk in His light. Be pleasing in His eyes. If we do that, everything else will take care of itself.
