UGANDA – In the rural areas of East Africa, the strength of the Christians and the church has waned considerably due to present conflicts, mostly stemming from poverty. A dedicated ministry in Kampala is tasked with a glorious miracle mission to play their part to resolve some of these current dilemmas. In some ways they have succeeded, in other ways, they have encountered hindrances. They want to raise awareness in hopes of seeing a change.

Pastor Kabuye Peterson and his wife Pastor Justine Kabuye at Glorious Miracle Missions International (GMMI), are making a difference within the borders of Uganda. They have a church, orphanage school, orphanage home, and a monthly feeding program held twice a month.

“We feed the needy and the vulnerable. We dress them, we use the small money we get now, and buy meds, food, and clothes,” Pastor Justine proudly shared.

In addition to that, they revisit churches they have opened in Uganda to preach and make sure it stays revived spiritually.

While preaching the gospel, they help the people naturally by caring for them through their charity medical clinics. They treat the sick and provide free medication to the needy. The Kabuye’s are happy to report that their charity medical clinics have become a success.

“We do charity medical clinics, wherever we go to preach the gospel,” says Pastor Justine Kabuye. “It’s doing well because God has called us to do all. My husband…has opened many churches in the country. In all those places we have been going to preach…we treat the sick for free.”

While the success has taken place, they also have faced struggles with some programs targeted to help the community. They made an effort to create a community based organization called Focus on the Most Vulnerable in Communities (FMVC) catering for the less privileged in communities. They helped orphans, widows, HIV/Aids victims, elderly, single mothers, youths, drug addicts, street children, the homeless, school dropout girls, and the destitute. However, due to the lack of financial support, they experienced a high level of difficulty in this program. They did not receive any sponsors or donors to help.

Raising Awareness about the Current Conditions in Uganda

The Kabuye’s want to bring awareness to the world about the spiritual and natural issues within their country. There is a raised concern in Uganda regarding the strength of the Body of Christ. Pastor Kabuye Peterson takes the time to share the details of why these problems exist.

Rural Areas Lag Behind Spiritually

According to Pastor Kabuye Peterson, the gospel is mainly centered in urban areas. Most of the churches are primarily located within the cities and towns, leaving the villages and rural areas spiritually dry in terms of faith and salvation.

“Our people living in villages are spiritually weak compared to those living in the towns and cities. There is too much hunger and thirst for the people living in the rural areas. Many are getting saved, but at the end of the day they backslide. They go back to their original denominations and religions because there is no one to encourage, raise their faith, and teach them,” said Pastor Kabuye Peterson.

Some Spiritual Leaders Lack Knowledge

Another problem he explained is that ministers within the five-fold ministry in Uganda need theological knowledge. The lack of knowledge among the spiritual leaders has inadvertently caused the work of God not to be as effective as it should be. When there is little knowledge, it negatively impacts the work flow of the church, sometimes tainting the true gospel.

“The spiritual leaders such as pastors, prophets, apostles, evangelists…do not have theological knowledge,” Pastor Kabuye exclaimed. “Most people here start a church without any theological knowledge, so they end up messing up with the work of God.”

Disunity Among Spiritual Leadership

He also shared there is a wide range of disunity among the Spiritual/Pentecostal leaders. This causes each man’s work to be isolated. This in turn, limits the greater potential the church could have if there is a formed bond between the leaders, and the church as a whole.

“We are not united. Everyone is fighting for his or her own ministry. People take ministry as their property.”

The Church & Christians Face Spiritual Weakness Due to Poverty

Pastor Kabuye Peterson also mentioned that poverty in Uganda has caused various problems in the lives of people…including Christians. Many are dropping out of school because they can’t afford the education. The cost of education, according to Pastor Kabuye, can be quite costly in Uganda. Others are without jobs leaving them vulnerable during times of hardship. When these Christians are presented with such difficulties, they easily revert back to their old ways.

“Most Christians are poor and unemployed, which has led many to backslide when challenges arise,” Pastor Kabuye Peterson stated.

Spiritual Churches Lack Incentives

According to Pastor Kabuye, incentives are rarely granted to the spiritual churches within the country. Instead, other religions are receiving these benefits. This leaves the spiritual churches with no relief, having to fend for themselves in terms of obtaining church necessities.

“In Uganda [we are] not regarded as a religious denomination. Therefore, incentives are given to other denominations, like Catholics, Muslims, Anglicans…” shares Pastor Kabuye Peterson. “The incentives offered to those denominations are not offered to the Pentecostal Churches in our country.”

Lack of Church Stability, Negatively Impacting Church Growth

He also alluded to a problem whereby many ministries are in rented buildings. This has caused the attendance of the Body of Christ to drastically dwindle. Reason being, is that they are searching for quality buildings and permanency among the churches.

“Most spiritual churches don’t have permanent land where they can build permanent buildings. Most of us are in rented places,” expressed Pastor Kabuye with deep concern in his eyes. “This has affected the congregation. Many have stopped from attending churches because they are looking for quality buildings.”

The Spiritual Needs of Uganda

Pastor Kabuye explained the spiritual needs within Uganda among the Body of Christ. Such needs include spiritual revival, massive church planting, disciple mentorship, special training for spiritual leaders. He also believes there is a necessity to show love to the unsaved, and the need of renewed hope among the Christians.

The Natural Needs of Uganda

Based on the thoughts of Pastor Kabuye, there is a need for fair distribution of wealth to all natives, and employment opportunity creation. He acknowledged the need for a better infrastructure and proper sanitation. With a running population of 49.6 million people, he suggested proper rural to urban development to avoid congestion and overpopulation in the towns and cities. Lastly, he mentioned the need for proper control for modern disease and infection.

Plans to Tackle These Spiritual and Natural Issues

The Lord has placed it on the heart of Pastor Kabuye and his wife to do their part to make a change through GMMI. They want to build a grade school, a hospital, and community center for the orphans, elderly, homeless, and widows.

“We want to build a school from kindergarten, primary level, secondary level, high-school, and tertiary institution. We want to build a hospital which can cater for the health needs of our poor people and also to do a cost sharing of those who can pay for medical services. We want to build a community center for orphans, elderly homeless, and widows.”

In Uganda, healthcare can be costly, leaving those who can’t afford it to be susceptible to health risks and life-threatening diseases without treatment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the top ten causes of death in Uganda are: “neonatal disorders, malaria, HIV/Aids, lower respiratory infections, tuberculosis, stroke, diarrheal disease, ischemic heart disease, congenital birth defects, and sexually transmitted diseases (excluding HIV).” WHO statistics also show that the average life span of a Ugandan is about 66.7 compared to the worldwide life expectancy of 73.3 in 2019 (WHO, 2024). Pastor Kabuye believes the hospital they want to build will help out greatly, when it comes to maintaining the health of the people within the community. They plan to give free healthcare to those who can’t afford it.

“Regarding the poor ones…the needy…we want them to acquire free medication. Many people are dying because of diseases here,” stated Pastor Kabuye with compassion.

They are also currently looking at two acres of land for $25K USD. They believe God will enable them to acquire the land to build a school with the help of supporters. The future school will help improve education among the less fortunate. It will also vastly reduce the number of school dropouts.

“Most of our people are school dropouts. Reason being, they cannot afford to go through all the required levels of education in Uganda. So we are passionate about building a school whereby these needy children…these orphans…can join this school.”

If they get the land…they can make the next step to building on it. It will be a place of permanency for the work of the Kingdom of God to go forth. With faith, all things are possible!

Another great thing to celebrate within Uganda is that there are no restraints on how they should worship. There is freedom of religion. In other words, if one accepts the invitation of salvation, there is freedom in Christ. That’s why it is important for the churches to be empowered, equipped, and unified in this beautiful country to expand the Kingdom of God.

“The freedom of worship exists here in Uganda!”

Their ultimate goal is to ensure many souls are won to Christ, to increase gospel missions, discipleship classes, training missionaries, training the children, and youth to create a future legacy. GMMI believes this can be accomplished by working with international ministries through partnerships and affiliations. They also have faith that many of these dilemmas will be resolved through spreading awareness.

So far, it is clear that God is using Glorious Miracle Missions International (GMMI) to make a positive impact within Uganda. They are preaching the gospel, winning lost souls to Jesus, clothing the naked, feeding the hungry, helping the poor & the orphaned, caring for the sick, and more.
